Welcome to 2015

Wednesday Jan. 21st was our first meeting of 2015.

Susan Bowslaugh and Paula Perri spoke about what judges look for in a juried show - basically things that you may want to consider working on even if you don't enter a quilt in a juried show.
Then they worked in small groups with samples of Paula's first quilts and Susan clarifying some of the categories that you would find in the CQA/ACC National Juried Show.

Many of local quilt shops were available for guild members to shop without having to venture out into the cold.

Lynne showed a few of the quilts that she has ready for the Community Outreach Programme (aka Quilts for Others). Some will go to people who have had a major fire in their homes.

Workshop for February will feature Roberta Masecar and her "Glitzy" pieces - some even becoming purses/bags!

A couple of reminders:
- M,N,O,P,Q, & R were responsible for the goodies for the social table for February
- in case of cancellation, members and visitors are to check the blog, the website.
But Gloria suggested that good judgment on your personal safety is always a good idea.

Closing out the evening with Show & Tell, which included some of the finished QFO's.

Elizabeth Dillinger - Nov 19th meeting

Elizabeth Dillinger was invited to Niagara Heritage to bring her trunk show and do a workshop for our members. She arrived in St. Catharines on a very snowy day - lucky she didn't have to go to south Niagara or Buffalo - probably would have been cancelled. But she made it and what a show!

A tribute to Canada

Her trunk show showed her progression of her quilting/art over the years after she moved to Canada from Maine. She likes to think of herself as one who works outside the box, loves to use threads to enhance her work.

Back of Christopher's Decision quilt

While Elizabeth showed her quilts, she always showed the backs of them - her more recent pieces were almost as good as the fronts.

Many of her pieces have been entered into juried shows - the latest being to Houston.
And a few have won awards - no wonder - simply amazing work!
Elizabeth designs fabric and patterns for Cantik Batiks.
Some guild members benefited from her expertise with threadwork when they took her workshop Thursday.

Help Wanted

During the day of November 19th, members are encouraged to come to Merritton Community Centre between 10am and 4 pm to help prepare the quilt tops that were made last year as part of the Community Outreach program for the guild.

Workers on quilts last year

Anyone wishing to help can show up at any time, with their sewing machine and all the extras that you need to do this job (and probably a lunch).

We're hoping to get these tops ready for long arm quilting. Then they'll need binding.
There's always a home for this quilts

Meals On Wheels

A few of the placemats gathered this year
Each year Niagara Heritage Quilters' Guild has put their sewing machines to work to make placemats that they give to the Meals on Wheels for St. Catharines & Thorold District.
Always a fun thing to do and always appreciated by those who receive them. Over the years, some of the recipients have sent a note to guild. For some this is their only Christmas "gift" that accompanies their meals.

Christmas cards are usually attached to each placemat to add a little more to the "gift".

These pictures are a sampling of some of the placemats that have been made this year.

Some even have backs that are not Christmas related so they can be used all year round.

Community Outreach - Oct

NHQG has been very busy with community service.

We had a challenge in the spring to make a quilt top from a mixed bag of donated fabric scraps. Thirty three wonderful tops came back and will be assembled and sent to our longarmers for quilting.

This month alone, thirteen quilts were donated to a Womens' Shelter in Niagara Falls, while another four went to a family suffering a devastating fire.

On average we sent out approximately 60 to 80 quilts a year, all through the loving hands of our devoted guild members.
